Fellow

Dr. Andrew Hurlburt

Andrew Hurlburt finished training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at UBC in 2019 with additional certification in Tropical and Travel Medicine. After initially locuming throughout B.C. and working as an ICU Clinical Associate (CA) at St. Paul’s Hospital, his career changed significantly with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

Most of the subsequent two years was dedicated to Vancouver Coastal Health’s response to the pandemic, including crafting elements of the regional infection control approach, spearheading outbreak management in long-term care facilities, and managing the rollout of
novel COVID-19 therapies.

Andrew continued to work as an ICU CA throughout this time, becoming a regular professional CA at VGH. Since stepping back from his COVID-19-specific roles in June 2022, he continues to work multiple days per week in the ICU when not locuming in Infectious Diseases. This experience reignited a passion for critical care, prompting him to apply to UBC for fellowship training, which has fortunately been successful!

Looking ahead, Andrew looks forward to the immersive experience of fellowship and to pursuing his interests in systems innovations, quality improvement, and optimizing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infections in ICU patients. Outside of work, Andrew enjoys playing sports, travelling, and spending time with his fiancée, Sara, and their dog, Pepper.
